At least three people sustained gunshot injuries after suspected gunmen ambushed electoral officials and party representatives in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The incident was disclosed by a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst, Zagazola Makama, via his X handle and sighted by AFRIPOST.
He said, “Atleast three persons sustained gunshot injuries when electoral officials and party representatives were ambushed while moving election results to a collation centre in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area.
“Sources said that the incident occurred at about 7:48 p.m. along Irrua Road near the Irrua railway station.
“The officials were travelling in a Hummer bus and two other vehicles under armed escort from Uzea to the collation centre in Uromi when they came under attack.
“The sources said a gun battle ensued, during which three persons in the entourage sustained gunshot injuries. Three INEC officials and party representatives who fled into the bush during the attack were later rescued.
“The injured victims were taken to Irrua Specialist Hospital and are responding to treatment.
“The bus conveying some officials was recovered, while another vehicle in the convoy carrying election results for Ward 6, Esan North-East, was not affected.
“The sources added that operatives were combing the bush to arrest the assailants, while noting that elections in the area were otherwise peaceful and collation was being monitored.
