APC demands cancellation of Kano by-election, rerun over violence

Must read

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to nullify the bye-election in Shanono/Bagwai constituency and the rerun in Ghari constituency, both in Kano State, citing widespread violence and disruption.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the ruling party alleged that the elections were marred by armed thugs who unleashed chaos across several polling units, forcing many voters to abandon the process.

The APC maintained that the scale of violence recorded in the affected constituencies undermined the credibility of the exercise, stressing that security operatives deployed to the areas were overwhelmed by the attacks.

“Allowing the process to continue under such conditions of intimidation and lawlessness will not only undermine democracy but also set a dangerous precedent for future elections,” the party said.

It argued that credible polls cannot take place in an atmosphere where violence dominates the electoral space, noting that the rights of voters to freely choose their representatives had been grossly violated.

The statement, signed by APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, insisted that INEC must act swiftly to preserve the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system by cancelling the elections.
