The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it will, on Friday, arraign 23 suspected internet fraudsters before Justice D. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos.
The anti-graft agency disclosed the development in a statement posted on its X account, formerly Twitter, and sighted by AFRIPOST.
The suspects were among 93 persons arrested during a sting operation at a hotel located within the precincts of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
According to the EFCC, profiling revealed that those apprehended were indicted for offences bordering on impersonation, identity theft, and other forms of internet fraud.
The commission stated that the arrests followed intelligence that the suspects were holding a pool party to celebrate their alleged cybercrime activities.
“The planners got wind of the Commission’s intelligence and scampered to the OOPL expecting a sort of covering from arrest.
“The former President’s facility was not a target of EFCC’s operations. The suspects were the target and have confessed their involvement in internet crimes,” the EFCC said.
The commission clarified that the arraignment will be conducted in batches, with the remaining suspects expected to face trial soon after.
The EFCC assured that it remains committed to tracking and prosecuting cybercrime offenders across the country.
