Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, has thrown his weight behind African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Justina Azuka ahead of the Onitsha North Constituency 1 by-election.
Obi, who was seen wearing an ADC-branded cap during the campaign, urged residents to rally behind Azuka, describing her as a symbol of resilience and service in the face of tragedy.
Azuka, the widow of the late Labour Party lawmaker Justice Azuka, joined the race under the ADC platform following her husband’s abduction and killing.
AFRIPOST had reported that the legislator was kidnapped on December 24, 2024, along Ugwunaobankpa Road in Onitsha’s Inland Town, and his remains were discovered at the Second Niger Bridge on February 6, 2025.
Speaking on his social media pages, Obi praised the candidate’s courage, noting that despite the “gruesome loss” of her husband, she had chosen to continue his legacy through public service.
He described her as “qualified, competent, and a woman of strength,” highlighting her HND in Public Administration and her commitment to serve the remainder of her late husband’s 13-month tenure.
“I have always said leadership must blend competence with compassion,” Obi stated. “Supporting Mrs. Azuka is not just about electing a capable representative, it is also a show of solidarity that will help ease the burden of her loss.”
The by-election, scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025, comes amid renewed political momentum for the ADC, which is building alliances to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
The opposition coalition, of which Obi is a key member, has vowed to strengthen party structures and prioritise collective interest over individual political dominance.
