Dental student dies by suicide after exam results

Must read

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) community has been thrown into mourning following the death of a Dental College student who reportedly took his own life shortly after examination results were released.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Wednesday, the president of the International Federation of University Dental Students Association (IFUDSA), Adebayo Idris, described the loss as a heartbreaking tragedy that underscores the mental health struggles many students face in silence.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry. His death is not only the loss of a bright and promising life but also a painful reminder of the unseen battles students endure,” Idris stated.

The association expressed deep sympathy to the student’s family, urging fellow students to look out for one another and speak up when facing emotional or psychological challenges.

“Mental health is just as important as physical health. No one should feel isolated in their struggles,” Idris said, stressing the importance of peer support within the university.

IFUDSA further pledged to intensify efforts in advocating for better student welfare and stronger mental health support systems on campus to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The incident has sparked renewed conversations among students and staff on the urgent need for accessible counselling services and a more supportive academic environment.
