Boko Haram fighters have launched another deadly assault on Nigerian troops in Borno State, killing at least two soldiers and leaving several others injured.
The attack targeted a military base in Rann, Kala Balge Local Government Area, during the early hours of Monday.
According to military insiders cited by Saharareporters, the insurgents overpowered the troops after a fierce gun battle, setting ablaze armoured vehicles and seizing an undisclosed cache of ammunition.
Some soldiers were forced to retreat across the border into Cameroon in a desperate bid to survive the onslaught.
“They came in large numbers and engaged us heavily. Two of our men were killed, many were injured, and some had no choice but to cross into Cameroon with their weapons,” one source revealed.
AFRIPOST reports that this latest assault comes only months after 22 soldiers, including a commanding officer, were killed in Malam-Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area, in another devastating Boko Haram attack.
Nigeria’s military has fought the insurgency in the North-East since 2009, with Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states being the most affected.
Despite repeated claims by authorities that the extremist group has been “technically defeated,” Boko Haram and its offshoots continue to launch deadly raids, killing thousands and displacing millions.
Troops on the front lines have long complained of inadequate weaponry and support, alleging that poor logistics leave them exposed against heavily armed insurgents who have waged a brutal campaign for over a decade.
