AGF, IGP will determine K1’s fate – NCAA

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has maintained that the fate of fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as K1 de Ultimate or KWAM 1, will be determined by the Attorney General of the Federation and the Inspector General of Police.

NCAA spokesperson, Michael Achimugu, made this known in an interview with Saturday Beats after KWAM1 issued a public apology over the August 5, 2025, incident at the local wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

In his statement, the singer described the altercation as “unfortunate,” insisting it was never his intention to disrupt operations or breach aviation regulations.

AFRIPOST reports that the confrontation, which was caught on camera and went viral on Wednesday, showed the musician in what appeared to be an attempt to block a plane from taking off.

The incident sparked nationwide criticism, prompting Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and the NCAA to impose a six-month flight ban on KWAM1.

The pilots involved were also suspended pending investigation. On Thursday, the NCAA confirmed it had petitioned the AGF and IGP, seeking the artiste’s probe and possible prosecution.

When asked on Friday about the agency’s position after the apology, Achimugu said he had not seen it, but stressed that the NCAA could not directly prosecute the case.

“We have referred the case to the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General of the Federation, who are better positioned to determine and communicate the next steps,” he said.

Keyamo, reacting to inquiries from Saturday Beats, confirmed seeing the apology but noted that it had not yet been formally deliberated on.

“We have just seen this (apology) on social media like everyone else. We have not had the opportunity to deliberate on it,” Keyamo wrote in a WhatsApp message to our correspondent.

Police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi said he would have to verify whether the petition had been received but had not provided feedback as of press time.

Efforts to obtain a response from the AGF also proved unsuccessful.

In his apology, KWAM1 said, “The incident that occurred at the local wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on August 5, 2025, involving my humble self and ValueJet Airline, was, to say the least, unfortunate.

“Unknown to many, I suffer from chronic dehydration, and my doctor strongly advised that I remain constantly hydrated. This is why I always carry a water flask with me. And contrary to the negative narrative being circulated in some quarters, the flask I carried on that particular day contained only water, not alcohol, as wrongly alleged.”

The musician further explained that the flask had passed two security checks empty and was only filled with water at the lounge before boarding, which he said could be confirmed through CCTV footage.

Reaffirming his “unwavering patriotism and unshaken loyalty” to Nigeria, KWAM1 added, “Over the years, I have consistently used my God-given talent and platform to promote the Nigerian brand across the globe. I would never do anything to tarnish the image I’ve built over the past five decades, nor would I knowingly act in a way that could diminish the reputation of the country I love so dearly.

“That said, the incident is sincerely regretted. I remain committed to upholding the values and responsibilities that come with being a global ambassador of Nigerian music and culture.

“To the Presidency, Ministry of Aviation, FAAN, NCAA, ValueJet, fellow Nigerians, and my teeming fans across the world who have shown great concern since the incident happened, I tender my unreserved and heartfelt apology.”
