According to its judiciary, Iranian authorities hanged a man on Wednesday who was found guilty of espionage for Israel by disclosing information about a nuclear scientist who was murdered during the country’s 12-day conflict with Israel in June.
The Iranian authorities vowed further that more executions will be carried out on anyone caught spying on the country’s national affairs and jeopardising its safety.
“Roozbeh Vadi… was executed following judicial proceedings and confirmation of his sentence by the Supreme Court,” the judiciary’s Mizan Online website said, adding that the man had leaked information about a “nuclear scientist who was assassinated during the Zionist regime’s recent aggression.”
When he was arrested and condemned was not immediately known.
Mizan claimed that after being recruited online by Mossad, Israel’s intelligence organisation, Vadi transferred “classified information.”
AFRIPOST reports that Israel began an extraordinary bombing campaign against Iran in mid-June, which led to a conflict in which Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks.
The Israeli offensive, which targeted both military installations and residential areas, claimed the lives of hundreds of people, including senior military officers and nuclear scientists.
Local media reported that the Israeli offensive killed at least a dozen nuclear scientists.
Since the battle, Iran has promised to expedite the trials of those detained on suspicion of working with Israel.
Iranian authorities have announced the execution of several individuals found guilty of cooperating with Mossad and the arrest of numerous individuals suspected of spying for Israel.
Human rights organisations like Amnesty International claim that Iran is the second-most frequent executioner in the world, after China.
