The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that nine people lost their lives in a boat accident that occurred in Zangon Maje Village, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The agency disclosed the tragic incident in a statement shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday.
According to NEMA’s Kano Operations Office, the accident took place on the evening of Sunday, July 27, 2025, at around 7pm when a boat conveying 17 passengers, mostly young girls capsized en route from Digawa Village in Jahun LGA to Zangon Maje Village in Taura LGA.
The statement read, “Upon the arrival of the NEMA team at the scene, it was confirmed that eight individuals were rescued alive by local divers, while nine others were unfortunately confirmed dead.
“NEMA, in collaboration with the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (JSEMA), the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), and local government officials, sensitised the community on the importance of adhering to safety protocols while travelling by water.
“As part of the response efforts, NIWA also donated life jackets to the community.”
The agency also noted that emergency response efforts were promptly activated in collaboration with state and local stakeholders to manage the situation and support the affected community.
