Despite the Yobe state government’s implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (Yobe University chapter) has stated that their ongoing strike at the university continues.
The Yobe University ASUU chapter explained that the reason the strike will go on is simply because the state government has yet to meet their other demands aside from the implementation of the new minimum wage.
While talking to the press on Monday morning, the chairman of Yobe ASUU, Ahmed Karage expressed his frustration and that of the members.
He revealed that the state government is yet to fulfil the implementation of academic staff promotions as approved by the university council and the payment of promotion arrears from 2018 to 2025.
Karage added that the payment of arrears for the minimum wage consequential adjustment from 2019 to 2024, a 35-25 per cent salary award for Professors and other ranks from 2023 to 2025, and arrears of the N70,000 minimum wage from January 2024 to June 2025 have not been met by the state government.
Concluding his statement to the press, the ASUU chairman pleaded with members of the public, parents and students to bear with the situation and revealed that the strike will be called off immediately the Yobe ASUU and the state government reach an agreement on the neglected demands.
