A senior police officer on special deployment to a troubled community in Plateau State has been ambushed and killed by unidentified assailants.

Inspector Philemon Akawu, who was attached to the Department of Operations (DOPS) in Jos, was reportedly murdered early Wednesday morning near Yelwa Nono village in Bokkos Local Government Area.

He had been assigned to the area to support internal security efforts amid growing unrest.

Sources told security analyst, Zagazola Makama that the officer was attacked around 7:30 a.m. while carrying out routine duties in the bush close to a security outpost.

Confirming the development, a spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command stated that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Bokkos led officers to the location where Akawu’s body was discovered.

His remains have since been taken to the Luna Hospital morgue for examination.

“The Command is doing everything possible to bring those responsible to justice,” said a senior officer who asked not to be named. “We have launched a full investigation and are working with locals to track down the killers.”
