The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed 491,000 tablets of smuggled Tramadol in Kano as part of efforts to rid Nigeria of dangerous drugs.
Dr. Martins Iluyomade, Director of Investigation and Enforcement at NAFDAC, carried out the destruction exercise on Wednesday, representing the agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye.
Prof. Adeyeye disclosed that the consignment of Tramadol 225mg was intercepted on May 28, 2025, by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kano/Jigawa Area Command, following an attempted smuggling operation.
“In a commendable act, the Customs team led by Comptroller Dalhatu Abubakar seized the shipment after smugglers abandoned it at the border,” she said.
“The total consignment, made up of 491 rolls, is estimated to be worth N91 million in duty value.”
She emphasised that the seizure reflects the strength of collaboration between NAFDAC and other enforcement bodies in tackling the spread of unapproved pharmaceutical products.
“We urge Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any illegal drug dealings. The health and safety of the population remain our top priority,” Adeyeye added.
