The Nigerian Senate has debunked reports circulating on social media that claim the Senate Committee on Constitution Review has recommended the creation of new states.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the clarification during Tuesday’s plenary after Senator Abdul Ningi raised concerns about the spread of unverified information online.
Addressing the issue, Akpabio stated clearly that no new state had been created or approved by the Senate.
“I have seen over 42 proposals, but not one has gone through full deliberation. The process of creating a state is very rigorous and has not been completed in any instance,” he said.
He further expressed concern that some communities have already begun organising meetings to plan for their supposed new states based on misinformation.
“People are jumping the gun. No state has been created by the Senate,” Akpabio stressed.
He urged citizens to disregard such claims and wait for official announcements.
“The public should rely only on formal communication from the National Assembly on constitutional issues,” the Senate President advised.
The Senate reiterated its commitment to due process in all constitutional matters.
