At least 16 people were killed and over 100 others injured after a Bangladesh Air Force fighter jet crashed into a school compound in Dhaka on Monday afternoon.
The incident, which occurred at Milestone School and College in Uttara around 1:06 p.m. local time, caused widespread panic as fire and thick smoke engulfed the cafeteria and nearby classrooms.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as students, staff, and nearby residents scrambled for safety.
Authorities confirmed the jet involved was an F-7 BGI trainer aircraft operated by the Bangladesh Air Force.
It reportedly lost control shortly after takeoff and plummeted directly into the school building, which was in full academic session.
Emergency responders, including the military, firefighters, and volunteers, rushed to the scene.
Several victims were burned beyond recognition while many others suffered severe injuries. The pilot was among those killed.
Bangladesh has declared Tuesday a national day of mourning in honour of the victims. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash.
“This is one of the darkest days for our education system,” said Education Minister Dipu Moni. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families.”
