The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken a swipe at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing his administration of failing to fulfill its promise of delivering uninterrupted power supply to Nigerians.
The party also condemned what it described as worsening conditions in the power sector despite significant increases in electricity tariffs.
In a strongly worded message posted on Sunday, July 20, via X (formerly Twitter), the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said the Tinubu-led government had shown little urgency or progress in tackling Nigeria’s longstanding electricity crisis.
According to the party, more than two years into President Tinubu’s tenure, the country is still grappling with frequent national grid collapses, erratic power supply, and a lack of meaningful reform.
The ADC noted that while tariffs have skyrocketed by over 200 percent, service delivery remains poor, especially for millions of rural dwellers who remain completely off the grid.
“Since taking office, President Tinubu has overseen 12 national grid collapses, while electricity tariffs have surged by 240%. Yet, many Nigerians still receive no more than 4 to 6 hours of power daily,” the party stated.
The ADC said the President has failed to present a concrete roadmap for transforming the power sector, adding that his campaign promise of providing 24-hour electricity within four years now appears to be a broken commitment.
“Over 90 million citizens are still without electricity access, and in rural areas, entire families remain in darkness. Despite this, there has been no clear strategy or impactful reform effort from the administration,” the statement added.
The party also reminded President Tinubu of his past declaration that Nigerians should not reelect him if he failed to fix the power sector. With the 2027 general election drawing closer, the ADC said the people are watching closely and ready to hold him accountable.
“Mr. President, where is the light? What happened to your promise? And how much longer must Nigerians remain in darkness?” the ADC asked.
