The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party has elected Senator Nenadi Usman as the interim national chairperson of the party.
The decision was made during the NEC meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, where the party’s leadership resolved to restructure its internal administration ahead of its national convention. Senator Darlington Nwokocha was also appointed as the interim national secretary.
According to a communique released after the meeting, the NEC mandated the new interim leadership to supervise upcoming party congresses across the country.
The process will include elections from the ward level up to the national level.
The meeting had in attendance several top party figures including Abia State Governor Alex Otti and the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero.
NEC also instructed the national secretariat to publish guidelines and timelines for the congresses in line with the party’s constitution.
The new leadership is expected to remain in place until a substantive leadership is elected at the party’s national convention.
