A deadly robbery incident in Benin City has claimed the life of a police escort, identified as Sergeant Aminu Yusuf, during a routine security operation for a Chinese national.
According to insider reports, the attack occurred on Wednesday afternoon, not long after the security team left Zenith Bank’s Sapele Road branch with a N5 million cash consignment.
Sergeant Yusuf, whose force number is 504545, was attached to Time Ceramic under official deployment and was responsible for guarding the expatriate during the cash movement.
Eyewitnesses said four gunmen ambushed their vehicle along First East Circular Road, shot the officer, and seized his service rifle, ammunition, and the cash being transported.
The officer was quickly taken to Benin’s Specialist Hospital but could not survive the gunshot wounds. His body has been deposited at God’s Care Morgue.
The Edo State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the robbers, pledging to bring them to justice and recover the stolen assets.
