Security has been significantly tightened in Daura and other parts of Katsina State ahead of the arrival of the remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in a London hospital.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly directed Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to accompany the late president’s body back to Nigeria.
Buhari is expected to be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura in line with Islamic rites.
In preparation for his burial, security operatives have been deployed to key locations including the Umaru Musa YarAdua International Airport and major roadways such as the Daura Roundabout and the Kayauki Daura corridor.
A correspondent on ground in Daura noted the presence of at least 11 security checkpoints along the Kayauki Daura route.
Security has also been intensified around Buhari’s residence and the Emir of Daura’s palace where armed personnel are stationed.
The atmosphere in Daura remains solemn. Only a few mourners have gathered at Buhari’s home, while a public holiday declared in honour of the late president caught some residents off guard.
Government workers and students unaware of the directive were seen returning home after reporting at their offices and schools.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria NAN, residents expressed grief over the passing of the former leader who died at the age of 82. Many recalled Buhari’s simplicity, humility, and enduring connection to his people even while holding the nation’s highest office.
A neighbour, Alhaji Lawal Nalado, described him as a man who remained grounded despite his status. “He never allowed power to change his character. He was punctual, prayerful, and generous especially during festive seasons,” he said.
Nalado added that during every Sallah celebration, Buhari was known for sharing food, money, rams, and essential items with those in need.
“He was approachable, fair, and lived modestly throughout his life,” he added.
Another resident, Alhaji Hamisu Ibrahim, praised the former president’s commitment to Islam and youth development. “He often encouraged young people to avoid drugs, focus on education, and live a disciplined life,” he said.
