Supreme Court to deliver verdict on Edo guber poll dispute today

Must read

The Supreme Court of Nigeria is expected to announce its final judgment today, July 10, at 9 a.m. in the legal battle over the September 21, 2024, Edo State governorship election.

The case was filed by Asue Ighodalo, the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who is challenging the victory of Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Following the election, Ighodalo and the PDP contested INEC’s declaration at the Election Petition Tribunal and later the Court of Appeal but lost at both levels.

They subsequently proceeded to the Supreme Court in a last-ditch effort to overturn the outcome.

The five-man panel of the apex court, chaired by Justice Mohammed Garba Lawal, had earlier stated during proceedings that the date for judgment would be announced to all legal representatives involved.

The Supreme Court’s decision will mark the end of all legal arguments in the matter, as it serves as the final judicial authority in electoral disputes in Nigeria.
