Former Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has expressed strong disagreement with the Supreme Court’s ruling which affirmed the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, as the duly elected governor of the state.
The apex court, in a judgment delivered on Thursday, July 10, upheld Okpebholo’s victory in the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election, dismissing the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo.
Reacting to the verdict, Obaseki described the judgment as disappointing and a blow to the democratic expectations of Edo people.
He insisted that the PDP won the election and accused the judiciary of overlooking alleged irregularities that took place during the polls.
“I strongly disagree with the decision of the Supreme Court. The judgment does not reflect the will of the people,” he said.
Obaseki, however, stated that he remains committed to the rule of law and urged citizens to remain hopeful.
He added that while legal options have been exhausted, the pursuit of justice and good governance must continue.
