BREAKING: Supreme Court fixes date to rule on Edo governorship dispute

Must read

The Supreme Court has scheduled Thursday, July 10, 2025, as the date to deliver its final judgment on the controversial 2024 Edo State governorship election.

This development comes as Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seeks to overturn the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Monday Okpebholo, in the last gubernatorial race.

According to Naija News, all parties in the legal battle have now been notified of the scheduled ruling.

The apex court had earlier adjourned the matter indefinitely after listening to arguments from all sides.

During the hearing, Ighodalo’s legal counsel, Ken Mozia (SAN), insisted that the PDP candidate secured the highest number of valid votes and deserved to be declared the winner.

“We urge the court to invalidate Obekpolo’s return and declare our client as the duly elected governor, based on the actual lawful votes cast,” Mozia told the panel.

But the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), represented by Kanu Agabi (SAN), urged the court to dismiss the case.

Agabi noted that the PDP initially denounced the entire election process as unlawful and could not now seek to benefit from it.

“You cannot discredit an election and at the same time seek to benefit from it,” he told the court.

“They are being inconsistent. If the election is unlawful as claimed, then no one can be declared winner from it.”

INEC maintained that the PDP’s legal arguments were contradictory and called on the court to affirm Okpebholo’s victory.

The five-member panel, led by Justice Garba Lawal, said the ruling had been reserved and the judgment date would be formally communicated, which has now been fixed for July 10.
