WAFCON 2025: Oshoala, Babajide shine as Nigeria thrash Tunisia

Must read

The Super Falcons of Nigeria delivered a statement performance in their opening match of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, brushing aside Tunisia 3–0 in a Group B encounter held in Casablanca on Sunday.

Barcelona forward Asisat Oshoala gave Nigeria a perfect start with a powerful header in the fourth minute, thanks to a pinpoint free-kick from Rinsola Babajide.

The former Liverpool winger turned scorer later in the first half, weaving past two defenders to net Nigeria’s second goal.

Babajide’s celebration paid homage to Portuguese winger Diogo Jota, who recently passed away, drawing attention on social media.

Substitute striker Chinwendu Ihezuo rounded off the scoring late in the second half to confirm a solid victory for Nigeria. The Falcons maintained control throughout the match, limiting Tunisia to just one shot on target.

Head coach Justin Madugu expressed satisfaction with the result but urged the team to remain focused. “We’ve only just started. We’ll take it one game at a time,” he said.

Nigeria, in search of a historic 10th WAFCON title, will look to build on this momentum in their next match against Botswana.
