PDP chairman quits party, cites injustice

Must read

Hon. Seun Adelore, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, has officially resigned from the party, pointing to deep-seated internal issues and a departure from the party’s founding values.

In a resignation letter dated July 7, 2025, and made available to the press in Ibadan, Adelore—an ally of Governor Seyi Makinde—announced his withdrawal from both his leadership position and membership of the PDP.

He accused the party of abandoning democratic ideals and becoming a tool for a few powerful individuals.

“I write to formally tender my resignation as the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ibadan North Local Government, effective July 7, 2025. I also hereby withdraw my membership from the party,” the letter read in part.

Sources close to the development suggested that Adelore’s exit may not be unconnected to the controversy surrounding the selection of Governor Makinde’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Folajimi Oyekunle, as the PDP’s consensus candidate for the upcoming Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election.

The choice was reportedly endorsed during a meeting led by the governor, where other aspirants were persuaded to step aside for Oyekunle.

In his resignation letter, Adelore expressed frustration over what he described as growing acts of imposition and political intolerance within the party.

He said he could no longer remain in a structure where “loyalty is punished” and democratic values are consistently undermined.

“For the past two years, I’ve observed a pattern of authoritarianism, vendetta, and disrespect for democratic principles within the party’s leadership. The ideals that once defined the PDP have been replaced with personal interests and selective rewards,” he stated.

Adelore, who previously served as Chairman of the Oyo State Waste Management Board, thanked his supporters and emphasized his continued dedication to the progress of Oyo State and the promotion of democratic governance.

As of the time of this report, the PDP leadership in the state had yet to respond to Adelore’s resignation, and efforts to reach the State Chairman, Dayo Ogungbenro, for comment were unsuccessful.
