Elon Musk launches America Party to challenge U.S. political status quo

Must read

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has officially launched a new political movement, the “America Party,” following his opposition to President Donald Trump’s controversial spending legislation, known as the “One Big, Beautiful Bill.”

Musk announced on Saturday via a post on his social media platform X, stating that the party was created to restore Americans’ freedoms and disrupt what he labelled a dominant “one-party system.”

“In terms of bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk wrote.

“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

The declaration came a day after he posted a poll on Independence Day, asking if Americans wanted “independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system.” Over 1.2 million people responded, with a 2-to-1 margin in favour.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” he added.

Musk’s decision deepens his rift with President Trump, whose recently signed budget bill Musk claims will severely damage the country’s economy.

Despite being a top donor to Trump’s 2024 re-election campaign and serving as head of the Department of Government Efficiency, Musk has since broken ties over the legislation.

Musk had warned he would take political action against lawmakers who backed the bill, saying: “They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”

There has been no official response yet from either President Trump or the White House.

Earlier this week, Trump reportedly threatened to revoke federal funding for Musk’s companies and even hinted at deporting the billionaire entrepreneur, who was born in South Africa.
