Senate gives condition for lifting Senator Natasha’s suspension

Must read

The Nigerian Senate has stated that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan must fulfil specific conditions before her suspension can be lifted, despite a court ruling mandating her reinstatement.

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja had on Friday nullified the six-month suspension placed on the Kogi Central lawmaker, describing it as excessive and a violation of her constituents’ right to representation.

“The court is not saying the Senate lacks the power to discipline its members,” she noted, “but such measures must not infringe on constitutional provisions.”

However, Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu maintained that the Red Chamber is not compelled to reinstate the senator immediately.

According to him, while the court acknowledged the Senate’s right to discipline its members, it also advised Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to take certain steps before any further action can be taken.

“The court never removed the Senate’s authority to sanction members,” Adaramodu said.

“It’s on record that she committed an infraction. The judgement advised her to make restitution. After that, the Senate will review the matter and decide the next course of action.”

He added that the Senate expects an apology from the suspended senator.

“The next move is hers. Once she complies with what the court suggested and tenders an apology, the Senate will convene to assess her response,” Adaramodu stated.
