2027: Former Ondo Senator leaves PDP for ADC

Must read

Senator Nicholas Tofowomo, who served as the representative for Ondo South Senatorial District between 2019 and 2023 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has officially withdrawn his membership from the party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Tofowomo announced his resignation in a letter dated July 4, which was addressed to Mr. Joseph Akindolire, the PDP Chairman in Ward 3, Ile-Oluji, located in Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Speaking with journalists over the phone on Friday in Okitipupa, the former lawmaker cited internal party crises as a major reason for his exit.

He noted that the growing unrest within the PDP had pushed many members to leave, and after consulting with his political base, he made the decision to move to the ADC.

He explained that if he had been seeking political appointments, he would have opted for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), but chose instead to align with the ADC, which he believes has the capacity and unity to challenge the APC in the upcoming elections.

Tofowomo also shared his views on the current state of the country, expressing concerns over the economic difficulties facing Nigerians.

While acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s success as a former governor of Lagos State, he said the President’s approach at the national level has led to rising hardship.

He specifically pointed to the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira as policy decisions that have contributed to widespread poverty and inflation.

Reflecting on past administrations, the former senator recalled the economic stability during the era of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Vice President Atiku Abubakar, noting that Nigeria’s debt was significantly reduced during their tenure.

He also praised the leadership of former Senate President David Mark, saying the National Assembly then acted independently and defended democratic values.

Tofowomo expressed optimism that the ADC could offer a strong alternative and restore Nigeria’s economic direction if given the mandate in 2027.
