LP denounces 48hr ultimatum to Obi, labels Abure-led goup as impostors

Must read

The Labour Party, under the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman, has dismissed reports claiming that Peter Obi was issued a 48-hour ultimatum to resign or face expulsion from the party.

The party described the ultimatum, allegedly issued by the Julius Abure-led faction, as baseless and mischievous.

In a statement released by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Acting National Chairman, the party urged the public and media to disregard what it called a deliberate attempt to mislead Nigerians.

“Our attention has been drawn to false reports suggesting that Mr. Peter Obi has been given a 48-hour deadline to step down from the party due to his role in recent coalition talks and his attendance at the unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja,” the statement read.

“To be clear, the Labour Party leadership publicly endorsed Mr. Obi’s involvement in coalition-building efforts on May 26, 2025. That stance remains unchanged,” it continued.

According to the party, Obi’s participation in the coalition and ADC event was fully supported and approved by the legitimate leadership of the Labour Party.

Those behind the ultimatum, the statement said, are “political jesters” with no authority or recognition within the party or under Nigerian law.

“These individuals were long ago removed by the Supreme Court and suspended from the party for persistent acts of indiscipline and anti-party behavior,” the statement added.

It further noted that the current leadership is still addressing the aftermath of the crisis allegedly created by the Abure-led group.

“The public and media are advised to ignore the distractions coming from these discredited figures,” the statement concluded. “Only the office of Senator Nenadi Usman, as the Acting National Chairman, represents the official voice of the Labour Party on all matters.”
