Lagos govt shuts down Lekki mall over fatal parking incident

Must read

The Lagos State Government has indefinitely sealed Purple Mall in Lekki following a tragic incident that led to the death of a resident at the mall’s parking facility on Wednesday.

Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, confirmed the closure in a statement, noting that the decision was made to protect public safety and allow for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal event.

Wahab disclosed that a special investigation team has been set up to uncover the root cause of the incident, particularly focusing on structural issues and potential regulatory lapses.

“The team will examine both the immediate and underlying causes of the collapse, the mall’s adherence to building and safety standards, and any environmental or structural infractions that may have contributed to the tragedy,” he said.

Describing the incident as deeply regrettable and avoidable, the commissioner emphasized the government’s determination to hold those responsible accountable and to put preventive measures in place going forward.

“This heartbreaking accident was entirely preventable,” Wahab said. “We will ensure full accountability and take every step necessary to prevent a recurrence. Lagosians deserve to feel safe in public spaces, and we will not compromise on that.”

He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and reassured the public that thorough steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The commissioner also promised that regular updates would be shared as the investigation progresses.

Reaffirming the government’s stance, Wahab reiterated Lagos State’s commitment to strict enforcement of safety and environmental regulations across all commercial and public buildings.
