Gunmen launched a deadly assault on the residence of former Plateau State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Damishi Sango, in the late hours of Tuesday, July 2, leaving one person dead and another seriously injured.

The attack occurred at Sango’s home in Dalwal village, located in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

According to reports, the assailants stormed the compound around 10:46 p.m. and opened fire, targeting individuals within the premises.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama, who confirmed the incident, stated that a police officer identified as Inspector Walba Go Tom, attached to Sango from the Special Protection Unit Base 4, Makurdi, sustained gunshot wounds during the attack. His service rifle was also reportedly taken by the attackers.

“A female relative of the former minister was also hit by gunfire and later died while receiving treatment at Plateau Specialists Hospital in Jos,” Makama added.

“The police officer is currently hospitalised and responding to treatment.”

Local sources revealed that the gunmen fled the scene before any help could arrive.

Though widely known for serving as Nigeria’s Minister of Sports from 1999 to 2001 under President Olusegun Obasanjo, Sango has remained a key political figure in Plateau State, particularly as the former chairman of the PDP in the state.

The attack comes amid a resurgence of violence across Plateau State, where ongoing clashes between communities and suspected herdsmen have led to increased insecurity.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
