Must read

Several prominent opposition figures gathered at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on Tuesday for the official unveiling of a new political coalition backed by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as preparations for the 2027 general elections begin to take shape.

Among the notable attendees were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi.

Also present were former Governors Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) and Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), as well as Senator Dino Melaye, former Youth and Sports Minister Solomon Dalung, and PDP chieftain and media entrepreneur Dele Momodu.

Other political heavyweights seen at the event include Senators Gabriel Suswam and Ireti Kingibe of the Labour Party, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha, and a former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (retd.).

The new coalition, which draws support from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and other political blocs, is rallying under the ADC as a unified platform to present a formidable challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential election.

David Mark, a former Senate President who recently exited the PDP, is expected to lead the press briefing and has been named interim national chairman of the ADC.

Former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has also been appointed as the interim national secretary of the coalition-driven party.

The coalition’s emergence comes as part of ongoing efforts among opposition leaders to consolidate their strengths ahead of the 2027 polls and reshape the political landscape.
