Abubakar Malami, Nigeria’s former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice during Muhammadu Buhari’s administration from 2015 to 2023, has officially parted ways with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has just been unveiled as the official platform for a new opposition alliance.
His defection was revealed shortly after the opposition coalition formally endorsed the ADC as its united political front ahead of the 2027 elections, making Malami one of the most prominent figures yet to align with the movement.
In a statement issued on Wednesday afternoon, Malami explained that his choice followed “extensive consultations” and was motivated by a personal commitment to Nigeria’s recovery.
“Following deep introspection and broad consultations, I am announcing my departure from the APC and declaring my support for the ADC, the chosen platform for a coalition committed to saving Nigeria from further deterioration,” he said.
Malami expressed concern over the current state of the nation, condemning what he described as rampant insecurity, a struggling economy, and an administration increasingly driven by “propaganda rather than genuine governance.”
