President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday night met with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.
Simultaneously, the President also met with Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule and other lawmakers in what appears to be a major step toward resolving the prolonged political crisis in the state.
The closed-door meeting took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, according to multiple reports, including confirmation from Channels Television.
Although the full details of the discussions have not been made public, the meeting is seen as a significant move towards reconciliation between Wike and Fubara, whose strained relationship has contributed to months of political unrest in Rivers.
Earlier on Thursday, Governor Fubara was also reported to have met separately with Speaker Amaewhule in Abuja—a development that further suggests that both sides may be working toward a peaceful resolution.
The political crisis in Rivers deepened earlier this year when President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state and suspended Governor Fubara along with other elected officials.
The new engagements signal that the Presidency may now be mediating a truce.
