Cristiano Ronaldo extends Al Nassr stay, despite trophy drought

Must read

Cristiano Ronaldo has officially committed his future to Al Nassr, agreeing to a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the Saudi Arabian club until 2027.

The announcement came on Thursday, ending speculation about the next step in the Portuguese star’s career.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is staying at @AlNassrFC until 2027,” the club confirmed in a statement shared via their official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Just moments earlier, Al Nassr teased fans with a promotional video showing the 40-year-old forward strolling along a shoreline and declaring, “Al Nassr forever.”

Ronaldo joined the Saudi Pro League side in 2023, sparking a wave of high-profile signings by players nearing the twilight of their careers, as the oil-rich Gulf nation intensified its push to become a global football powerhouse.

Despite being the league’s top scorer with 25 goals this season, Ronaldo’s team failed to secure any major silverware, finishing third in the league and falling short in the Asian Champions League semi-finals.

Following the season’s end in May, Ronaldo sparked exit rumours when he wrote, “This chapter is over,” just hours after the final whistle of the domestic campaign.

Nonetheless, his continued presence in Saudi football is seen as pivotal. “Ronaldo’s presence is a key factor in developing the Saudi league in the last two years and a half.

He opens the door for elite and young players to come to Saudi Arabia,” a Public Investment Fund (PIF) official told AFP in May.

PIF, which backs several top-tier Saudi clubs including Al Nassr, Al Hilal, and Al Ahli, has become a central force in the country’s sporting ambitions, including hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
