A violent raid unfolded in Yelewata, Benue State, on Friday night when suspected armed herders launched an assault at approximately 10:00 pm, leaving a trail of bloodshed in their wake.
According to the Daily Post, preliminary information received in the early hours of Saturday revealed that no fewer than 16 people sustained injuries of various severities during the attack.
However, the total death toll remains uncertain as officials are still compiling data from the affected area.
Security forces responded swiftly to distress calls, but tragedy struck again when personnel from the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) encountered an ambush near Daudu while heading to the troubled community.
The ambush claimed the lives of three security operatives, two soldiers and one NSCDC officer, who were attempting to restore order.
“These brave men paid the ultimate price in service to our people. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” a local resident mourned, praising the fallen officers.
Meanwhile, those injured in the attack have been rushed to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi, where medical professionals are calling on the public to donate blood to help save lives.
Citizens and humanitarian agencies are being urged to step forward with aid, particularly through medical supplies and blood contributions.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the families of the victims, especially our fallen heroes in uniform,” said a concerned community member, adding that sharing graphic visuals would disrespect the dignity of the deceased and their grieving families.
