The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has cautioned the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, stressing that only sincere efforts toward peace and reconciliation can prevent his impeachment.
At a press briefing held in Abuja on Tuesday, Tony Okocha, Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee in Rivers State, criticized the governor for failing to take steps toward mending the political rift with members of the State House of Assembly.
The warning comes amid the lingering political crisis between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, which prompted President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the state on March 18.
Following the declaration, both Governor Fubara and the House of Assembly were suspended, with retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas appointed as the state’s sole administrator for a six-month period.
While the governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have taken legal action challenging the President’s intervention, recent talks involving Tinubu, Wike, and the suspended governor suggest possible progress toward resolving the crisis.
Speaking amid speculations that the President may announce the reinstatement of Governor Fubara during the upcoming June 12 Democracy Day celebrations, Okocha maintained that no real reconciliation has taken place.
“As of today, there has been no move by the suspended Governor Fubara to reconcile with the lawmakers,” Okocha said.
“If he wants to avoid impeachment, he must pursue genuine reconciliation. The Supreme Court ruling remains in effect.”
