Fresh violence erupted in Benue State on Monday evening as herdsmen launched separate deadly attacks in Agatu and Apa Local Government Areas, resulting in multiple fatalities.
According to the Daily Post, in Agatu LGA, a man identified as Sunday Dutse lost his life in a brutal assault along the Odugbeho-Ogbaulu route.
Dutse, a native of Odejo and younger brother to a former local government chairman had previously been displaced by earlier attacks in the region and was taking shelter in Ogwule-Kaduna within the same local government before the incident.
Meanwhile, earlier that same day in Apa LGA, three young men were killed during a surprise attack in the Edikwu-G’Icho community.
According to locals, two of the deceased were residents of Edikwu-G’Icho, while the third victim was from nearby Ugbokpo.
These violent incidents come despite recent assurances from top military leaders, including the Chief of Army Staff, who visited the state with promises to bolster security across conflict-prone areas.
The recurring violence has once again raised concerns about the effectiveness of government efforts to protect lives and restore peace in the region.
