The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Adewale Ajao, has issued a direct order for the arrest of a woman accused of subjecting a 14-year-old girl to severe abuse and starvation in Abuja.
This urgent command followed the circulation of a distressing video on social media in which the girl, identified as Bashariya, shared her painful story in Hausa.
The video showed visible injuries on the teen, who hails from Zamfara State.
She explained that she ended up in Abuja after her parents escaped their bandit-ravaged community and sought shelter at an IDP camp in Gwiwa Eka.
In the clip, Bashariya revealed that she was employed as a domestic helper under the guise of a better life, but instead was maltreated.
According to her, she was regularly denied food, beaten, and even burned as punishment.
The disturbing footage, which exposed bruises and burn marks across her body, sparked nationwide outrage online and demands for immediate justice.
Responding to the incident, the spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, told our correspondent that Commissioner Ajao moved swiftly after watching the video.
“Although no formal complaint was filed with the police, the Commissioner of Police, Adewale Ajao, has directed all Divisional Police Officers in the FCT to trace and arrest the suspect without delay,” Adeh said.
She emphasized the police chief’s firm stance against child maltreatment, stating: “The CP strongly condemns any act of child abuse.
“He emphasises that anyone who knows they are not capable of properly caring for a child should refrain from taking on such responsibility. No child should be made to suffer such cruelty.”
Adeh also appealed to the public to remain observant and proactive in reporting abuse.
“When you see something, say something. Together, we can ensure the safety and well-being of every child in our communities,” she concluded.
