Must read

A tragic incident occurred on Sunday along New Ipaja Road in Lagos, where a female pedestrian lost her life after being hit by a speeding vehicle at the Mosalasi Roundabout.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the fatal accident involved a black Toyota Tundra with registration number FST 222 HV, which veered off the main road, mounted the sidewalk, and struck the unidentified woman.

In a statement issued by LASTMA’s spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, the accident was described as a lone crash caused by excessive speeding.

He explained that the impact of the collision was so severe that the pedestrian died instantly.

Further details revealed that after hitting the woman, the vehicle continued on its path and rammed into a nearby livestock facility, causing significant damage to its fence and a nearby billboard.

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver attempted to flee the scene following the incident.

However, LASTMA officials on duty responded swiftly, apprehending the suspect before he could escape. He was subsequently handed over to officers from the Gowon Estate Police Command, who arrived at the scene shortly after.

“The force of the crash carried the vehicle into a private property known for selling livestock, destroying parts of its perimeter fencing and an adjacent advertisement board,” Taofiq noted.

He added that the remains of the victim were handed over to police operatives for further necessary actions, while the driver is currently in custody and undergoing interrogation.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sympathy over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.

“This unfortunate event highlights the dangers of speeding and reckless driving. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family during this difficult time,” he said.
