UNIZIK to investigate student’s death after fall from three-storey building

The Chief Safety Officer of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka, Anambra State, has announced that the institution will conduct a thorough investigation into the recent death of one of its students.

The incident happened late Thursday at a private lodge near Royal Kitchen Junction in Ifite-Awka, within Awka South Local Government Area.

The student reportedly fell from the balcony of a three-storey building and later succumbed to his injuries.

It is believed the student had ingested an unidentified substance suspected to be “mkpurummiri” (crystal meth) before the fall.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported hearing a loud noise and discovering the student severely injured on the ground.

Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, attempts to save him were unsuccessful.

According to one source, the deceased was renting a room in the lodge.

When concerned neighbors checked his room, they found his roommate in an incoherent state, apparently affected by the same substance.

The roommate is currently in custody and will be questioned further when medically stable.

Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to inform the student’s family and to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Commenting on the event, UNIZIK’s Chief Safety Officer, Ken Chukwurah, said, “We are still gathering information to clarify what transpired and to confirm the identity of the deceased. The lodge is privately owned and not under university jurisdiction, so we do not control the tenants there.”
