Fear has once again descended on the Egwuma community in Agatu LGA of Benue State after a violent attack by suspected Fulani herders on Tuesday evening.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that two men travelling back from Olegomachi to Egwuma were waylaid by the attackers.
One was fatally shot on the spot, while the other has not been found at the time of this report.
Community members say the attackers have been occupying parts of Egwuma since October 1, 2024, following the withdrawal of military troops previously stationed in the area.
Since then, locals claim the community has been left exposed and unprotected, making them easy targets for further violence.
A concerned elder, who spoke under anonymity, said, “This has become a recurring nightmare.
The army’s departure last year marked the beginning of unchecked invasions.
“Our lands are no longer safe, and now our people are being killed.”
