The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confiscated a large cache of expired beverages valued at N35 million in Kaduna State.
The discovery was made following a tip-off from a concerned citizen on Sunday evening.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Andrew Tamanuwa, Deputy Director of the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate at NAFDAC’s Kaduna office, said the alert led to the interception of two buses and a Golf car transporting the expired products to Kwanar Dangora in Kiru Local Government Area of Kano State.
According to Tamanuwa, 700 packs of Schweppes and 300 packs of Fanta Orange were recovered during the initial operation.
Further investigation took the agency to a warehouse on Bayajidda Road in Kaduna, where even more expired drinks were found.
These included 588 packs of Schweppes, 3,508 packs of Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, and 87 packs of Fanta Orange, all of which had expired since November 2024.
The seized items have been moved to NAFDAC’s storage facility, where they will be destroyed.
Meanwhile, the owner of the expired products has been arrested, and investigations are ongoing to uncover any additional individuals involved in the illegal operation.
Tamanuwa called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious products, especially during festive periods when the consumption of beverages increases.
He stressed that the agency remains committed to protecting public health by cracking down on expired and unsafe goods across the country.
