The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, Sunday Bisi, has dismissed concerns that recent defections from the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC) pose a threat to Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election bid in 2026.
Bisi, in a statement on Wednesday, described the wave of defections as insignificant, insisting that the governor still commands strong support across the state.
He referred to the situation as “a storm in a teacup,” maintaining that Adeleke remains the preferred choice of the people due to his performance in office.
His comments follow growing speculation that the PDP in Osun may face challenges in the next election, following the exit of several members from its ranks.
Among the defectors is a sitting member of the House of Representatives, Wole Oke, who represents Oriade/Obokun Federal Constituency.
Former Senator Felix Ogunwale, who served Osun Central between 2003 and 2007, has also left the party, along with some of Oke’s political allies.
The defections have stirred unease within the party, with the APC taking jabs at the PDP over what it sees as a weakening internal structure.
The situation was further compounded when the three PDP senators from Osun recently endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term, raising eyebrows within political circles.
Despite these developments, Bisi expressed confidence that Adeleke’s performance in governance, especially in infrastructure development and social welfare programmes, will secure him a second term.
“These defections don’t move us,” Bisi said. “If you want to talk about a real political shift, look at what happened in Delta State, where the governor and the entire PDP structure crossed to the APC. That is a defection. What we’ve seen in Osun doesn’t come close and won’t affect us.”
He added that the people of Osun are satisfied with Adeleke’s leadership and will return him to office based on the tangible impact of his administration.
