Stark reality of climate change — Governors’ forum reacts to fatal flood in Niger

Must read

Following the tragic flood that devastated Mokwa in Niger State, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has conveyed its heartfelt condolences to Governor Usman Bago, as well as to affected families and communities.

The flood, which has led to the death of no fewer than 21 individuals and destroyed property worth millions of naira, triggered a nationwide wave of sympathy and concern.

NGF Chairman and Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, issued a formal statement on Friday, noting the severity of the incident and pledging the forum’s support during this difficult time.

“The Nigeria Governors’ Forum stands in solidarity with the government and people of Niger State on the devastating flood that has wreaked huge havoc in Mokwa town of the state,” AbdulRazaq said.

The governors expressed alarm over the scale of the catastrophe. “We are shocked by the magnitude of the flooding, which has resulted in the loss of lives and properties in the community,” the statement read.

“We sincerely commiserate with the affected families and express our support to the state government at this difficult time.”

In the aftermath of the disaster, the forum also acknowledged the efforts made by Niger State in collaboration with emergency responders.

“We also commend the interventions of the Niger State Government and its coordination with the emergency responders to support the victims of this disaster,” AbdulRazaq said.

He emphasized that the flood is yet another wake-up call about the dangers posed by climate change.

“This flood again reminds us of the stark realities of climate change and the accompanying effects on how we live.”

AbdulRazaq reaffirmed the NGF’s commitment to strengthening disaster response and preparedness.

“We commit ourselves as leaders of our people to continue to work with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to not only help our people cope with this global challenge but also to strengthen mitigative actions and relief institutions.”

The statement concluded with a prayer and a call for unity: “We pray God to console families who have lost loved ones and properties in the Mokwa incident, and we urge citizens to support the government’s efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change and to cooperate with agencies working to assist those in urgent need at this time.”
