The Kano State Government has welcomed the ruling of the Court of Appeal, which affirmed the legitimacy of the state’s local government elections.
Officials described the judgment as a major step forward for democracy and a strong affirmation of constitutional principles.
In a statement issued on Friday, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the government was pleased with the appellate court’s verdict, which overturned a prior ruling from the Federal High Court in Kano that attempted to stop the elections from holding.
The ruling came from the Abuja division of the Court of Appeal, where Justice Oyewumi ruled that the lower court lacked the authority to hear a case brought by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
The petitioners had questioned the transparency of the election and accused the head of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, Sani Lawan Malumfashi, of partiality.
The appellate court sided with the Kano State Government, ruling in its favor and confirming that the elections were conducted in accordance with the law.
Reacting to the decision, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf hailed the outcome as a victory for the democratic process and an endorsement of justice and the rule of law.
“This verdict reflects our deep trust in the judiciary’s role in safeguarding democracy and upholding constitutional order,” the governor stated.
He further noted that the ruling reaffirmed the state’s commitment to conducting fair and credible local polls, which produced leadership across all 44 local government areas and 484 electoral wards in the state.
Governor Yusuf also commended Kano residents for remaining calm throughout the court proceedings, saying their patience demonstrated a mature political culture and strong civic values.
He reiterated the government’s determination to strengthen local councils and ensure they have the support needed to deliver essential services and development at the grassroots level.
Commissioner Waiya, in his remarks, congratulated both the governor and the people of Kano, emphasizing that the decision reinforces public confidence in the judicial system and validates the outcomes of the electoral process.
“This judgment is a win for democracy and a clear confirmation of the people’s will as freely expressed at the ballot,” he added.
