Gov Okpebholo urges Ighodalo to join APC, offers political pardon

Must read

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has offered an unconditional political pardon to Asue Ighodalo, the PDP’s 2024 gubernatorial candidate, encouraging him to switch allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC) amid growing signs of abandonment by his former political backers.

The proposal, described as a symbol of sportsmanship, was announced in a statement issued on Friday by Fred Itua, the governor’s media aide.

It follows what Governor Okpebholo described as a “troubling” period for Ighodalo after the election loss.

“I want to publicly invite Mr. Asue Ighodalo to join us in the APC so that, together, we can advance the cause of development in our dear State,” Okpebholo declared.

“Since his vision aligns with what we are already doing through God’s help, we believe he still has a role to play.”

He accused Governor Obaseki of deserting Ighodalo, whom he reportedly persuaded to contest in the first place.

“Godwin Obaseki, who lured Asue Ighodalo to come and run for elections, is hiding in the United States of America,” the governor alleged.

“Half of Obaseki’s cabinet members who regarded Ighodalo as their own personal vending machine have all deserted him and are hiding abroad.”

Okpebholo expressed concern over Ighodalo’s political isolation and said the amnesty offer was also personal.

“As a brother who truly cares for Ighodalo’s wellbeing, I believe that this political amnesty will save him from this humiliation and loneliness.”

Highlighting the broader mission of governance and political inclusion, Okpebholo added, “As a people, we have a task of ensuring that we continue to develop Edo State, protect our people, and work hard to re-elect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. Asue Ighodalo can be useful in these key areas.”

The statement concluded by stressing that the move was part of the governor’s broader reconciliation and development agenda.

Okpebholo’s administration remains committed to fostering peace and healing political divisions caused by the last election cycle in Edo.
