Cholera outbreak kills 70 in two days in Sudan’s capital

Must read

A deadly cholera outbreak has killed at least 70 people within two days in Kosti, the capital of White Nile State in Sudan, amid worsening humanitarian conditions due to ongoing conflict.

Over 2,200 people have been infected within the past week, with most cases reported in overcrowded camps for displaced persons, where access to clean water and sanitation remains severely limited.

The situation worsened after a drone strike on the Um Dabakir power station disrupted water treatment systems, forcing residents to rely on unsafe water sources, health officials said.

Hospitals across the country remain largely non-functional, with over 80 percent shut down due to Sudan’s civil war, which erupted in April 2023.

Aid groups say the collapsing healthcare system is unable to cope with the rising number of cholera patients.

UNICEF has reported that more than 292,000 children are at risk in White Nile State alone, with over 500 confirmed cases among children in the affected areas.

Humanitarian organizations are now rushing to distribute emergency supplies and conduct vaccination campaigns to curb the spread.
