Four individuals were reportedly killed in Ondo town, the headquarters of Ondo Local Government Area in Ondo State, following a deadly altercation between suspected rival cult groups on Tuesday evening.
The violence erupted across various parts of the town, including Ife Garage, Sabo, and Christ Land in the Oka neighborhood, where gunmen wearing masks carried out the attacks.
According to witnesses, three men believed to be members of the Ẹiyẹ confraternity were shot and killed near Ife Garage, while another was gunned down in front of a roadside stall known locally as “Mama Shop” in Sabo.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the victims had been on the police’s radar for cult-related activities.
“We can confirm the deaths of four individuals and injuries to five others. All are suspected to have ties to cult groups,” Ayanlade said.
“Residents are encouraged to remain calm, as security operatives are actively monitoring the situation to ensure public safety.”
He also spoke on the police operation carried out early Wednesday in the New Garage and Ayeyemi areas, stating that the raid was a direct response to the violence.
“These are serious circumstances that require decisive action. Those arrested have suspected connections to the clash,” he explained.
“Our officers acted appropriately, and if any are found to have violated protocols, necessary disciplinary steps will be taken. Otherwise, their efforts deserve community support.”
