Abuja PDP office still locked despite Tinubu’s reopening order

Must read

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has not yet reopened the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), nearly two days after President Bola Tinubu directed that the property be unsealed.

As of 11 a.m. on Wednesday, a visit to Wadata Plaza, the party’s secretariat located in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, showed that the premises remained closed.

Both entry points were sealed, while staff and security workers lingered outside, unable to access the building.

The FCTA had sealed the office on Monday, citing failure to pay ground rent.

The PDP headquarters was one of several properties affected by the move, as the administration moved to reclaim 4,794 properties over unpaid dues reportedly amounting to ₦6.96 billion, with some debts dating back more than four decades.

Acting PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, speaking at the party’s National Caucus meeting on the same day, described the action as reckless and criticized the federal authorities for targeting the party.

On the other hand, Lere Olayinka, spokesperson to the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, insisted that the operation was carried out in line with legal procedures and was not influenced by politics.

In reaction to the backlash, President Tinubu instructed that the PDP office, along with other sealed properties, be reopened and granted a 14-day grace period for payment of the outstanding rent.

However, the secretariat remains sealed. A party source told The PUNCH that internal efforts are ongoing to resolve the issue and reopen the building as soon as possible.
