PDP NEC criticizes Tinubu’s leadership, announces convention date

Must read

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed serious concern over the worsening state of affairs in Nigeria under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of failing to address the country’s pressing economic and security challenges.

The criticism came in a communiqué issued at the end of the PDP’s 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

The NEC faulted the APC-led federal government for what it called “reckless policies” that have deepened poverty, crippled businesses, and sparked rising crime.

According to the party, Nigerians are bearing the brunt of misguided decisions such as the fuel subsidy removal, soaring electricity tariffs, excessive taxation, and a general decline in governance.

The PDP alleged that the economy is in decline, with millions of jobs lost and investors discouraged by the current climate of corruption and mismanagement.

The opposition also condemned what it described as a growing breakdown in national security, marked by widespread kidnappings, killings, and attacks on rural communities.

It held the President accountable, accusing him of neglecting his constitutional duty to protect citizens and maintain peace.

In addition, the PDP raised alarm over what it believes is an orchestrated plan by the APC to suppress democratic opposition and establish a one-party state through intimidation and political interference.

Despite the challenges, the PDP emphasized its resilience and reaffirmed its commitment to democratic values.

The party said the successful hosting of the NEC meeting demonstrates unity among its members.

As part of efforts to reorganize, the NEC approved the composition of two major committees in preparation for its upcoming National Convention scheduled to take place from Thursday, August 28 to Saturday, August 30, 2025.

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State will lead the zoning committee, with Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara as vice chairman and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang as secretary.

For the national convention committee, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa was appointed chairman, while Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun and Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu will serve as vice chairman and secretary, respectively.

The NEC also received a resolution from the South East zone of the party regarding the position of the National Secretary.

It resolved to deliberate on the matter further at its next meeting on June 30, 2025.

Ambassador Iliya Damagum, the party’s acting National Chairman, reiterated that the PDP remains determined to lead Nigeria toward better governance, pledging that the party will continue to champion the interests of the people.
