National Assembly set to approve harmonised Tax Bills after resolving disputes

The Nigerian National Assembly is on track to pass the harmonised tax reform bills by Tuesday, following the resolution of previously contested clauses, according to lawmakers involved in the process.

Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, Hon. James Faleke, shared the update on Sunday through his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Faleke, who led the House side of the harmonisation exercise, disclosed that the joint committee made up of Senate and House members had completed its review of the four tax-related bills.

He said the Conference Committee undertook a comprehensive review of the legislation, carefully analyzing each clause to resolve areas of disagreement.

“All grey areas have been addressed and the committee has finalised its report,” Faleke stated.

The intense review sessions reportedly stretched through Thursday night, continued all Friday, and concluded in the early hours of Saturday.

Faleke applauded the dedication of all committee members, with special praise for the Senate Finance Committee led by Senator Sani Musa.

“I sincerely commend Senator Sani Musa for his leadership, as well as my colleagues from the House Conference Committee for their dedication to national progress,” he added.

The harmonised bills, which aim to align Nigeria’s tax system with global standards, are now ready for consideration by both chambers before being forwarded to President Bola Tinubu for assent.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio had earlier expressed confidence in the reforms, describing the bills as a significant step toward modernising Nigeria’s tax structure.

Senator Musa, speaking after plenary, emphasized that the reforms would fund national priorities like cybersecurity, education, and military operations.

He also noted the introduction of a tax tribunal and an ombudsman to address tax grievances.
